A Guide to Wedding Reception Themes

By: Jennifer Mills

Depending on how ambitious you are, your wedding is only the first event to place your own "signature." Wedding receptions are kind of a "release" from the formality of the wedding.

They provide the bride, groom, wedding party and guests a chance for everyone to still celebrate the day, but also enjoy good food, catch up with friends and family and have a good time.

One very fun wedding reception theme idea is to leave it to your guests. Providing each table with a disposal wedding camera that allows guests to capture their own wedding moments that are then incorporated onto a CD for distribution after the wedding. This will allow guests to relive the reception and wedding after the fact.

Another idea is to make your reception emulate a "periodic" theme. For instance, your wedding party can dress in western garb, the place settings and table pieces can be western in flavor, party favors can be western oriented items and the food can be bar-b-q or other western cuisine. If you prefer a more formal approach, a southern antebellum theme or Victorian theme can make the event fun but also reflect your personal preferences and style.

Still another wedding reception theme idea includes incorporating a hobby or passion that you both share. Boston Red Sox reception themes are popular in Massachusetts and some happy couples have even sprung to have an appearance by a Bo-Sox player to provide autographs and photo opportunities. Other hobby or passion related themes have include receptions sporting putting greens, exhibiting flower displays and one reception where guests were encouraged to bring their pets.

If you just want to highlight certain interests, something more low key might be in order. This can include incorporating bride and groom stir sticks, dove food picks, celebration drink tickets and other mementos of the day. Remember, however, that most guests will want to take any mementos to commemorate your day so be prepared for most souvenirs to be taken with guests.

The point of any wedding reception themes are to incorporate the bride and groom's tastes and personalities into the event while including guest interaction to ensure that everyone that wants to do so can get involved. By using these or your own ideas you can create an event that everyone will remember for a long time. You also can be an inspiration for other couples as they plan their most special day and events.

The key to any wedding reception theme is that the atmosphere you select merges solemnity with a festive spirit. You do not want to have an environment where people feel stifled, but at the same time, you want to avoid a frat like atmosphere or that could rival something on an episode of Cops. Luckily, merging the two, with glamour, elegance and festive enjoyment is easy to do and your options are many.
