Choosing Flowers for a Wedding

By: Laura Bowman

A wedding can be an event that can place a lot of stress on a tight budget. Not only do you have to buy the dress, but you have to buy and send invitations, provide a meal for hundreds of people, buy a really expensive piece of flower and sugar (cake), and provide a place for the many attendants to gather. In addition to all these things, and the many things not accounted for here, you also have to buy a ton of flowers.

With the flowers, you can find many different kinds of species to decorate with. Purchasing all the floral supplies can be easy to do depending on where you are located. You can choose to have your own florist provide the flowers, or you can do it yourself with the help of your family and friends.

Begin with the type of flowers that you'd prefer. Always have a second choice since flowers, like fruit, can have different pricing during different times of year. For instance, daisies, lilies and orchids tend to be more available during the spring and supply and demand will dictate the cost. Roses tend to be extremely popular year round and there are stores that sell only roses making them an inexpensive place to purchase such flowers.

The other thing you will want to look at is the cost of silk flowers versus fresh flowers. A lot of the time, silk flowers cost less that fresh flowers, but can still deliver that beautiful look. Not only do they cost less, but they keep for a long time.

After you have determined the budget and the kind of flowers you would like, the next item to look at on your floral supplies list are things like fillers, vases, ribbons etc. Flower fillers can be things ranging from green leafy details to colorful wheat with little berries. In reality, there are so many different combinations of fillers you can use to match any event you are preparing for.

As far as ribbon goes, you can also choose from several different types and designs. You've got color and width selection, lace and or silk, decorative or plain edging and many other different combinations. In addition to the traditional kinds of ribbon, you can also place greenery tape and certain kinds of wiring in this category. You can usually purchase these things in the same area of the store.

Finally, containers that will hold the flowers. There are many choices depending on potted plants such as lilies or the usual wedding style vases that are typically used at the alter. Smaller bouquet holders for the bride and bridesmaids, fans or even holding a simple single lily or rose can be quite elegant. As for boutonnieres for the groomsmen, greenery tape covered over with ribbon is generally the way its done.

The most important thing in gathering your wedding supplies is that every minute is enjoyed. The wedding will be so much more memorable if each moment is captured to savor for many years to come.
