Cool Wedding Beach Decorations

By: Austen Nakajima

The average US couple spends $20,000 to get married and have a honeymoon. The average cost of decorations for the ceremony is $1600. That's 8% of the total budget for the wedding. Beach decorations can cost much less if you plan well. Read on to learn how.

You might think that finding wedding beach decorations is a no-brainer, but that's only true if you're incredibly creative. Otherwise it can be complicated.

Not to worry. Here are some simple tips to follow. If you do, you'll easily be creating elegant wedding beach decorations.

Flooring

You won't need flooring for a casual, barefoot beach wedding. On the other hand, if you want a more formal ceremony, you'll need flooring. It will prevent a host of problems like shoes filled with sand, soiled, wet or torn clothing, and guests having difficulty walking through the sand. You'll also want flooring if you plan to provide chairs for your wedding guests, especially any that may be elderly or infirm. Chairs can easily sink into the sand or tip over if there's no flooring.

Many rental companies rent flooring. With the set up, the average cost for rental flooring runs between $3.50 and $4.00 per square foot.

Arches

Many styles of arches are available, probably as many as there are brides who would love a beach wedding. It's easy to rent an arch but making your own is often cheaper. Begin with a metal or wood arch from a hobby shop or building supply store, then decorate it to suit your taste.

These two styles of arches are chic and ideal as wedding beach decorations:

Tropical Arch: Start with your metal or wood arch and wrap palm or banana leaves around it. Add a big dash of color with tropical flowers like antherium, birds-of-paradise or heliconia. Hang a large seashell, starfish or other beach item from the peak and you're done.

Chuppah arches: Often used in Jewish ceremonies, chuppahs are canopies made with a cloth or sheet supported by four poles. A chuppah provides an intimate ceremony and shade for the wedding couple. For additional appeal, use shorter poles and ask members of your wedding party to assist, with one holding each of the poles during your wedding.

Accessories for the Beach Ceremony

Whether you have set aside a small or large budget for your wedding, beach decorations can add luxuriousness to your ceremony. Here are some outside the box ideas for decorating your wedding without blowing your budget:

1. Use local flowers along the aisle. If chairs are on both sides, just suspend flowers from the chair backs and arms. If there aren't any chairs, create an aisle with palm fronds or banana leaves on the sand. Add some color by layering hibiscus, protea or other local flowers on top of the leaves.

2. Make your wedding beach decorations more beautiful by using torches. Tiki torches are perfect to pull beach decorations together. You can create a natural aisle by placing two rows of torches four feet apart. If you have an aisle already, set the torches randomly and light them for a tropical ambiance, which will be all the stronger if your wedding is at dusk.

3. Ribbons are another spot-on accompaniment for beach weddings. Ribbons, fluttering and waving in the ocean breeze, are just the thing for setting off your celebration. Use pastel colors in pink, blue and coral. Make sure ribbons are well-secured so they don't blow away.

4. You can capitalize on the beach vibe by placing starfish, sea shells, coconuts and palm fronds on the wedding beach. Be careful to avoid putting sharp items where someone might be injured by stepping on them.

5. Boat oars, anchors and fishing net are also perfect elements for unifying your beach wedding theme. Borrow these from friends or nearby residents along the beach.

More Money Saving Ideas

Try renting expensive items instead of buying them. It's more sensible to rent expensive flooring, tables, chairs and other large items. If you do purchase them, buy them on sale at warehouse clubs and hobby shops. Don't buy anything at full price.

Borrow smaller decorations from friends or family members instead of buying them. One of them probably will have an arch, extra ribbon or sea shells they would be pleased for you to use as part of your wedding beach decorations. Make a list of what you need, then ask around.

Make some of your own beach decorations. Bows, signs, ribbons and those types of decorative items are easy to make, and making them yourself will save you money.

Use flowers that are grown locally when possible. Local flowers are usually less expensive than ones that are grown elsewhere and shipped in. Also, flowers have a limited shelf life. If they aren't sold within several days, they must be thrown out. Ask local florists for deals on flowers they need to sell quickly.

Finally, keep your wedding beach decorations simple. When your wedding is on a beach, your true decorations are the surroundings. Just add a few tasteful elements and you're done.
