Wedding Invitations: History and Present

By: Lee Jenny

The History

A man walking the streets while announcing the wedding was a traditional way of dictating the wedding invitations between 17th to 19th centuries. This person was known as the town crier and generally shouts the wedding ceremony details in a loud manner. Everyone who heard the invitation was allowed in the wedding ceremony. Many would thought that why weren't the invitations handwritten? The answer is simple because people in those times were actually illiterate so that they were not able to read any written message though they could understand and communicate verbally. Families belonging to higher classes, where every member was educated, still used to send wedding invitations written in hand to other friends in higher society.

With the invention of printing press along with the invention of metal-plate engraving, bought a whole new concept in the way wedding invitation were made. The text of the invitation card was engraved in reverse manner onto a metal plate using the carving tool which was then used to print the cards. Tissue papers were used to save the cards engraved by placing them on the top of it. Then came the time when printing technology advanced and it was possible to print cards without engraving them. The advanced technology resulted in producing sharp and distinctive prints which established the way for several markets to emerge as wedding cards retailers and printers.

The postal services in older times weren’t very good as there was always a chance of damage to the wedding invitations. These services never remain reliable and upon that these were almost nonexistent from many areas back then. Generally a servant used to deliver all the cards or a member from the family took this responsibility of delivering all the cards to their respective destinations. The other way was to hire a courier agent who used horses to make prompt and faster delivery. People used to wrap their cards in double envelop so as to safeguard them against dust or damage in transit. The delivered cards were received by the butler or maid of the house who would remove the outer envelope and handed the inner envelop along with the invitation to the master or mistress of the house.

With developments in thermograph, a time came when people belonging to all the classes of society were able to afford wedding invitations. Thermograph produced shiny cards with raised lettering without impressing the surface of the paper, gaining more and more popularity day by day. This technique was popular amongst the masses as it gave the ability to live a life in a more standard way there by showing off individual materialism to the society.

The Present

In modern day world Letterpress printing has made a mark by producing results with deep impression having unique craft appeal to them. These printing presses are less in number though they have their own way to become big printing press in future. More recently, laser machines are used to engrave on wood as well as to mark certain types of metal invitations. This technique is the most modern technique in the market of wedding invitations and is here to last longer.
